What is Equine sports massage? (ESMT)

Using various techniques such as effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, trigger points, stress points, an equine sports massage therapist can help relieve & release the areas of tension & concern with relative ease.  Adding stretching into the treatment will also be extremely beneficial for the horse.  Working on all soft tissue including muscle, fascia and tendons, equine sports massage can produce great results. Horses are like people & not every horse will respond in the same way.  They are all individual & will be treated that way.  No two equine sports massage treatments are the same.

Equine sports & remedial massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissue, this includes muscles, tendons & ligaments throughout the body.  Massage works in several ways, here are some of them:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Prevent injury
  • Improve performance
  • Improve circulation and move nutrients around the body
  • Relieve muscle soreness
  • Stretch connective tissue
  • Improve general well being - and helps you and your horse to relax

Massage can be used to promote general well being and it can be used before and after an event.
